A few months ago, I made a bold decision: to take three or four months off from full-time employment for the first time since 1979. I’m incredibly excited about this next phase of my life! My plan is to spend the next three or four months laser-focused on my health, my home, and my family, all while staying connected to the retail industry I love.
Retail is my passion. I thrive on the dynamic nature of this business: the constant change, the relentless pace, the challenge of understanding the customer’s journey from transaction to experience. I love diving into the micro details—how every individual interaction can drive major improvements in conversion, loyalty, and growth. No other industry matches retail’s unique blend of macro trends and micro actions!
This summer, I’ll remain active as an advisor, and one of my greatest joys will be continuing to write and share Topper Tuesdays. These posts, published a few times each month, are my way of giving back to the community, and company, that has given me so much. Today, I want to salute General Colin Powell and his legendary leadership rule: Perpetual Optimism is a Force Multiplier.
Over the years, I’ve honed a list of 20 leadership lessons using Colin Powell’s leadership rules as a foundation. At any given moment in my career, one of these rules has always stood out as a guiding star, often during the most challenging times. I’ve been sharing these rules with my teams and leaders for well over a decade. For the next several weeks, I’ll dedicate Topper Tuesdays to the rules that have mattered most in my journey.
Today, I want to shine a spotlight on the one that has had the biggest impact: Perpetual Optimism is a Force Multiplier. It caught hold early on in my tenure at fabric, as it has at several of my past assignments. Our CEO often quotes this rule, and our leadership team has embraced it, especially during times of transformative change.
Perpetual optimism is the contagious belief that, together, we can achieve great things. It’s not about ignoring reality or glossing over challenges. It’s about facing obstacles with a “we’ve got this” attitude, inspiring those around you to reach higher and push further. Per General Powell:
“Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier. I am talking about a gung-ho attitude that says, ‘We can do this. We can achieve the awesome goal. We can beat the best.’ Spare me the grim litany of the realist. Give me the unrealistic aspirations of the optimist any day.”
Optimism is the secret ingredient that fuels progress. When a leader radiates hope and confidence, teams rally. They take risks, innovate, and find solutions where others see only problems. Optimism multiplies energy, creativity, and results.
The retail industry—like life itself—is a rollercoaster. There will always be new challenges, new beginnings, and new opportunities to lead. As we move forward, let’s choose optimism. Let’s believe in ourselves and each other. Let’s multiply our impact.
Here’s to the optimists—the force multipliers—who make every day in retail an adventure worth having.
Stay tuned for the next several Topper Tuesdays as we explore a few other of General Powell’s leadership rules that have shaped my life’s journey. It’s a fitting tribute to one of our great generals leading up to Memorial Day. And remember: Perpetual optimism isn’t just a mindset—it’s a superpower!
